Listen as Carrie answers a question about how to avoid the feeling of overwhelm when you begin a decluttering project

7-Guidelines to Follow to Declutter Your Closet

Cluttered ClosetThe clothes you keep in your closet are a reflection of who you are and who you want to be. For many people when they open their closet door they see clutter. It’s been said that clutter on the outside reflects clutter on the inside but how do you declutter on the outside?

Many people find going through their clothing difficult for several reasons.

  • You may feel guilty because you spent good money on something but never wear it.
  • You may love an outfit but it is no longer in good condition or it no longer looks good on you.
  • The clothing may bring back memories of an event you wore it at.
  • The outfit may represent someone you wish you were but it’s not you so you don’t wear it.

It can be difficult to go through your closet but it is worth it. When your closet is clutter free you not only make space but you’ll find that your entire day runs smoother. It will be easier for you to find something to wear in the morning which means that you will get out of the house with less stress and that will lead to a better day overall. Read more

How to Decide What’s Important to Keep and What’s Not?

How To Keep Things Cleaned Up

Messy ClosetI hear it all the time, “Carrie, I have to get organized!  My place is a mess.  I’ve tried to clean it up so many times but it seems that as soon as I’ve cleaned up it’s a mess again. How do I keep my office, my home, my car looking nice and neat?”

Does this sound familiar to you?  Well here’s the deal.

1.  Cleaning up and organizing are two different things.

Cleaning up is about how it looks. Cleaning up means that you put things away or at least get them out of sight.  Cleaning up is what you do before your mother-in-law visits.

When you clean up, you straighten the piles or maybe put them into bags or boxes and hide them out of the way.  When you clean up you gather all of the magazines and articles that you’ve been meaning to read and put them into a nice neat pile and decide that you really are going to read them.  When you clean up you gather your clothes up from the floor, from over the chairs and exercise machine and hide stuff them into your closet or drawer.

Organizing is about how it works. Organizing has nothing to do with how it looks.  Organizing is something you do for yourself, not your mother-in-law. Read more

Is Clutter on the Outside a Reflection of Clutter on the Inside

How Do You Decide What’s Worth Keeping and What’s Not?

Which Shoes Do I KeepA couple of weeks ago I had a conversation with a client who wanted to declutter his office.  We were talking about how to tell the difference between “things to keep” and “things to let go of.”

One of the tools he was using to help him make these decisions was to figure out what value he was getting in return for keeping “it”…whatever “it” was.

We started to talk about a set of books that he had on his shelf.  They were reference books that someone he has great respect for recommended that he purchase.  He bought the full series of books several years ago.  They are beautiful books and were quite expensive.  I asked him how often he refers to them.  He told me that the information in the books is great but he never uses them because it’s so much easier to look online for the information.

BUT, he reminded me, the books were expensive, a dear friend recommended them AND they were beautiful.

Then I asked him another question… Read more

How to Create Systems for the Things You Keep

woman at cluttered cubicleI got an email the other day asking me a question about creating systems…I think you’ll be interested in my answer.

The email said: “I know how to sort, throw out and keep but I don’t know how to organize, to put away. I am totally at a loss. I can never find any information about how to actually organize.”
So here’s the deal…If you’ve been a member of the CarrieThru community you know that I believe that systems are the LAST thing you do when you organize. Before you can even start to create systems you really need to know what you will be storing and that means decluttering comes first otherwise you’re just putting away your clutter. But when the clutter is gone what do you do?
Here’s what usually happens as I work with my clients. After the “extra” stuff is gone and we’re down to the things that matter, I ask them a few simple questions and the systems often suggest themselves because it becomes obvious to them how they will use it and why they are keeping it.
Here are four questions that I ask my clients that you can use to help you discover which systems work best for you.
