Moms with ADHD
You’re all grown up. You should have outgrown all of
this. You have your own kids. It’s what you wanted but
somehow you still consistently find yourself being unable
to focus, being unable to ignore distractions, being disorganized,
and not understanding why every one else seems to be able
to do this “Mom” thing without breaking a sweat.
Do these examples sound familiar?
- The “Super Mom” next door gets her kids to
school on time wearing clean clothes and with a freshly
made lunches in hand, she gets family dinners on her table
every night, and she has a REAL job too. Yours is a world
of trade-offs at best — on-time OR clean clothes OR
fresh lunch! You know you are as smart as your neighbor.
How does she get so much done?
- Other Moms have stopped inviting you over because you
never reciprocate. Of course you never invite them over
— you can’t imagine what they’d think
of the mess you live in!
- No matter how many different systems you have tried,
you just can’t seem to stay organized.
- You eagerly say “Yes!” when asked by the
PTA president to chair a committee or volunteer for another
fundraiser. You have great ideas and intentions, and somehow
you pull off the event, but you never get the job done "the
way it should be". You wonder why you are entrusted
with these responsibilities in the first place!
- You’d love for your children to have playdates,
you’d even enjoy some playdates for yourself but you
just can’t seem to get it together with enough lead
time to actually schedule them.
- You badger your children about setting priorities, getting
their homework in on time, and being on time to their activities
but you wonder how you can expect that from the kids when
they only have your example to follow?
These are all very real examples of how ADHD can affect Moms.
Moms with ADHD sometimes beat themselves up with questions
about their ability to manage "simple" tasks and
responsibilities. Coping with ADHD requires you to work in
your own unique way. There are ways to learn to channel your
energy so that you can get your children to soccer practice
on time and put dinner on the table. There are ways that you
can manage your things more effectively so that you can feel
confident inviting the neighbors over for morning coffee or
maybe even a dinner party.
I can help you discover these ways. I can work with you in
an understanding and insightful manner to help you discover
how to best exploit your strengths, how to compensate for
your weaknesses, and how to reach your potential.
